Intended as a fuzzy family fable, August plays more to the gag reflex than to the heart.. It's equal parts 'Flashdance,' 'Burlesque' and 'Lambada', all parts ludicrous - but we aren't here for the story any more than we watch Bela Tarr for the salsa numbers.. It tries very hard to be fanciful, lyrical, sentimental, magical, rapturous, romantic, heartwarming, tear-jerking and inspiring. The result, however, is a goulash of half-baked bathos.. Even as a musical celebration, the movie is a misfire....
